Surveillance of Ontario broodmares and Herpesvirus-1 associated abortions

Since the management of Ontario broodmares is varied and often farm-specific, understanding the nature, size, and health of the broodmare population and breeding sectors is valuable for the industry. This project will identify details regarding the current state of broodmare operations in Ontario, including average herd size, foaling rates, abortion rates and vaccine use. Additionally, specific questions will be asked to understand the importance of Equine Herpesvirus-1 (EHV-1) to the industry, and to determine the role EHV-1 plays in abortion.

Better understanding of the industry, and current abortion rates is critical for planning and budgeting for the following foal crop. Vaccination is thought to be the best current preventative measure for diseases such as EHV-1, but without a better understanding of the current industry, it is difficult to assess the role EHV-1 may play and the efficacy of the control measures currently in use.
