Dr. Bruce Guest, DVM, DVSc
PhD Student
After a 20 year career as an instrument and controls engineer, Bruce obtained a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan followed by an internship at Moore Equine in Calgary, Alberta. He then entered a large animal medicine residency at the Ontario Veterinary college completing a Doctorate of Veterinary Science in 2013. His research interest is the relationship between the mechanical properties of biological materials and pathophysiology. Bruce is enrolled in the School of Engineering co-supervised by Dr. John Runciman.
Dr. Diego Gomez-Nieto, DVM, MSc, DACVIM-LA

Originally from Colombia, Diego obtained his DVM degree in 2006 from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. After completing a MSc program in Physiology at the same university in 2011, he decided to do an internship in Large Animal Medicine and Aurgery at the Ontario Veterinary College for a year. By 2014, Diego completed his residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College and became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Intermal Medicine. Currently, Diego is enrolled in the Department of Pathobiology at OVC where he is doing his PhD in Veterinary Infectious Diseases, co-supervised by Dr. Scott Weese. His research interests consists of calf diarrhea, gastrointestinal diseases in large animals, acid/base disorders, and infectious control of diseases.
Dr. Goncalo Silva, DVM
DVSc Student
Gonçalo Silva got the degree in veterinary medicine from the Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2008. In 2012, after a first internship in Portugal he joined the OVC for a second internship in large animal medicine and surgery. Currently he is a graduate student at the University of Guelph, Canada where he is finishing his DVSc program. His research is focused on the development of a technique to assess pulmonary artery pulse wave velocity in horses.
Dr. Carina Cooper, DVM
DVSc Student
Carina is a long-time member of the University of Guelph Alumni. She completed her BSc (honors) Biomedical Sciences in 2009, then completed her DVM at the Ontario Veterinary College in 2013. After practicing in Ottawa and Colorado, she happily returned to participate in the Large Animal Internal Medicine Residency program at the OVC. Her research is focused on Equine Herpesvirus-1 prevalence in Ontario brood mares, and its effect on abortions rates. Carina is enrolled in the Department of Clinical Studies co-supervised by Dr. Brandon Lillie.
